Half the Sky

I watched the first part of the documentary on PBS last night called Half the Sky. It’s about a movement that is fighting against the oppression of women and children worldwide. I sat crying through most of it with a sickening knot in my stomach. Millions of women and children are sold into slavery, beaten, raped, imprisoned in brothels, and stripped of any chance of education every day in our world.

Quite honestly ignorance is bliss isn’t it? It’s so much nicer to not know about this stuff happening all around the world. It happens in our own backyard too. I just read an article in the paper this morning about a pimp who was forcing a young girl here into prostitution and drugging her as he did it. The world is a horrifying place sometimes. When I watched the faces of girls on the show last night that were the SAME age as my own daughter and some of them younger, sold into the sex trade, I thought my heart would tear in two. the good news is that there is hope, we can help make a difference even if it’s really small. And the greatest thing is that one day God will indeed do something about it. One day justice will be served.

Shows like this are overwhelming to me, almost too much to take in. But it’s reality for way to many woman and children in our world. If you want to find out how to help do something, even the smallest thing, or pray check out their website here.

If you missed it last night I highly recommend watching the rest of it tonight at 9 on PBS.
