The Not So Fertile Road #6

God often uses books in my life to speak to me, help me grow and encourage me. Here are some resources that I thought were helpful on this journey and that I think are helpful to anyone going through a hard time really.

Shattered Dreams. This was one of the best books that I read. I highly recommend it.

I also loved any book really that taught through the 23rd Psalm.

Unexpected Turns by Barbara Francis is a quick and easy read that I loved.

God: Discover His Character by Bill Bright. It helped remind me who God is and not be blinded by my feelings of who I thought God to be in that moment.

And last but not least of course is the Bible. It is God’s word to us. His living and active Word. His love letter to us. It was relevant in Old Testament times and it’s relevant today. God will speak, heal and guide our lives if we just open it and read it. What a glorious thing.

What books have you read that God used to encourage you, challenge you and shape you during a difficult season? I’m always looking for more good books to read.

  1. Letter to a Grieving Heart, by Billy Sprague was one of the most tenderly encouraging books I read in my grief, though it took me a few months to crack it open.
Streams in the Desert, a devotional by L.B. Cowman, challenged me and my thoughts about God.

I have a few others that were recommended and that I went so far as bought, but still haven’t read them. I liked A Grief Observed by C.S. Lewis, but at some point, I just got tired of crying so much and started reading other things to take my mind off it.

    I’m an escapist, I guess!

I just was killing time on facebook and saw in the newsfeed you had a blog post…. i figured from the title it was about funny stuff your daughter said. so i clicked on it and visited your blog for the first time. i have been reading it for like, 30 minutes (from newest to oldest, in backwards order) and i just want you to know what a big God we have- that he would use this series to minister to my heart and encourage me…. a girl you only knew a few years (and that was 8 years ago) all the way down in tennessee!
    thanks for your honesty!
