I just got done reading This Momentary Marriage by John Piper. I have to admit, I don’t read many Piper books because He’s so amazingly smart and deep that I have a hard time reading them fast enough and I get side tracked along the way. However, this book was a fast read for me and was seriously amazing. I’m not even sure how to summarize quickly all that I learned from this book. It was a reminder that “the most fundamental thing we can say about marriage is that it is the doing of God. And the ultimate thing we can say about marriage is that it is the display of God.” It was a challenge to be a woman with unshakable hope in God. Courage and fearlessness in the face of the future. Quiet tranquility of soul and humble submission to her husbands leadership. It gave the great reminder that the most fundamental task of a mother and father is to show God to the children. Children know their parents before they know God. This is a huge responsibility and should cause every parent to be desperate for God-like transformation. There was an incredible section on singleness and the great calling on their lives that is no less significant than their married friends, in fact they will have greater blessing than those who have married (Isa. 54:1; 56:5). And of course he touches on divorce and that too was a great and challenging section.
Whew! There’s so much more I could say about how I was challenged by this book but I won’t bore you with my ramblings. All this to say that I think everyone should read this book. Have you read it? What did you think? And if you haven’t, run out and get it. It’s a must read!
